How to buy game keys safely: 8 checks before you pay
A short checklist before paying for a game key, at any store.
- Store type: official reseller, own stock or marketplace — see the differences.
- Activation platform: Steam, Epic, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, GOG — it must match your account.
- Region: EU or Global for Europe — details.
- Cart total: service fees and optional subscriptions — what to untick.
- Refund policy: don't reveal the key until you're ready — refunds table.
- The seller (marketplaces only): number of ratings and account age.
- Payment: card or PayPal, so you can dispute.
- The price on the platform's own store (Steam/Epic): during big sales the gap can be small.
Red flags: a price far below every other store for a brand-new game, a seller with no ratings, being asked to pay outside the platform or by direct transfer, “accounts” sold instead of keys.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest place to buy game keys?
The lowest risk is the platform's own store and resellers that state they get keys from publishers: Fanatical, Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle and GOG.com.
Is it safe to buy a game account instead of a key?
We don't recommend it: selling accounts usually breaks the platforms' terms (Steam, PlayStation etc.), and the original seller can recover the account.
